Derrygooney is a townland in Co Monaghan and Derrygooney Lake is an idyllic place therein, adopted and beloved by our mother, Elizabeth Hickey from the early sixties up to her death in 1999.
She “rented ” a small disused farm house, up a long narrow lane, right beside the lake. Over the years she brought “nearly everyone she knew” down there to stay.
In the Derrygooney chapter we remember those visits, all the neighbours she came to know and love so well and we go through the many and interesting stories recorded in the visitors’ book. We show many photographs including farmhouse owner Willie Gray, blacksmith Peter Boylen in his forge and Elizabeth’s grandchildren Aiden and Deirdre Hickey spreading her ashes in the centre of the lake in September 1999.
