Elizabeth Hickey – The Early Years

Here we write about our mother’s early life, born in Scotland in 1917, through to her marriage and arrival at Skryne Castle in 1948.
Her mother was Agnes (Pennycuick) and her father was Edward Cecil Malet-Warden. She went to many schools including Nairn and Newton-Stewart in Scotland and Alexandra College and T.C.D. in Dublin where she graduated in 1937. She married our father, Noel Sydney Falkiner Hickey in 1941 in The Peppercanister Church, the ceremony preformed by their good friend, Rev. Samual Crooks, later Dean of Belfast. They lived for some years at 18. St Stephen’s Green’, above The Country Shop before moving to Skryne Castle in 1948.

Our mother trained in dress design at The Grafton Academy for Dress Making and Millinery and worked at the Gate Theater and with dress designer Donal Davis and with Knight and Petch. We include many photographs and some early blove letters.
