Robert Sydney Hickey

Our grandfather Robert (1854-1936) was the youngest of nine children of Rev. Noah Sydney Hickey, Rector of Taughmon, Multifarnham, Co. Westmeath and Elizabeth Buchannon D’Arcy of Hyde Park, Killucan.
Robert went to India age 22 in 1876 and kept a diary of his time there and his journeys over and back for twenty years. He describes his marriage to and the death of his first wife Julia Brisco in childbirth in 1886.
Robert married our grandmother Isobel Barron in 1903 and they lived at Moydrum until 1923 when they sold up and moved to Hyde Park, his mother’s former home, where it seems he inherited some land,

Robert’s brothers and sisters, unfortunately we don’t have very much information on them. They were Blaney Sutherland Hickey (1838-?) m. Mary French Ronald, their son Blaney Sydney Hickey (1874 – ?) married first Eliza (Lily) Nugent and second wife, Miss Murray. Blaney and Eliza had three children: Edmund, Gilbert and Mary Frances (Honey) Hickey. Honey married James Vincent and we have no further records.

Robert’s other brothers were William Thomas Hickey (1842-1882), Edmond Alexander Hickey (1844-1890), Charles Ambrose Hickey (1852-1923) who went to the U.S.A in 1875.

Robert Sidney Hickey’s sisters were: Elizabeth Louisa Hickey (1840-?), Charlotte Sophia Hickey (1841-1924), Anne D’Arcy Hickey (1845-1918) and Mary Isabella Hickey (1848-1918). Elizabeth married Rev. William Lethbridge and they had eight children: Sidney Lethbridge (1868-?) married E. Flint ( and second wife Susan Slater), they had two sons Jack Lethbridge and Robert Lethbridge.

Elizabeth and William’s other children were Kathleen Lwthbridge (1870-?), William Lethbridge (1872-?), Ambrose Lethbridge(1875-?), Bessie (Hilda) Lethbridge (1876-?) and Tom, Louisa and Gerry Lethbridge.

As well as photographs we include extracts from Robert Hickey’s Indian Diary

  2. I, too, am descended from Lt. William Hickey (1794-41) and Frances Isabella Gilbert through my mother’s side. I know very little about William Hickey’s brothers and sisters. So it is good to hear about his brother Noah Sydney Hickey. Is there documentary evidence that provides the names and dates of William’s parents and of their children?
I am also happy to share my researches by email.
